I finally beat Final Fantasy XIII! Here are my thoughts on it!!

It’s strange. I started playing Final Fantasy XIII around this exact time in 2020 and picked it back up again a few days ago, only to finish it hours later. Final Fantasy XIII is one of my favorite Final Fantasy’s and I’ve played most of them, it sits second only to 9.

Its setting and epic machine influenced designs is what stood out to me. I’ve already gone into detail on why I love it (https://moco.net/?s=final+fantasy+xiii) and I have a confession to make. It took me about 90 hours to finally “get” its combat system and ooh boy did it ‘click’. This is the most fun I’ve had with an RPG combat system, EVER!. It’s almost like playing an action RPG with how fast battles are completed and the frenetic-constant role changing gameplay makes for an addictive experience. I’m ashamed to admit it, BUT, I actually had to look up how to beat the last boss, and without spoiling anything, the fact that you can use such a common spell to do it is straight-up AWESOME!

A Stand-out Cast of Characters!

I’ll say it again, I LOVE the machine-inspired designs. Summons have you watching a machine change / contort / complete with gears and fast camera cuts. I am so glad that they decided to make two more games in this world as I’m still not quite done with exploring it. The story, sadly, is probably the weakest in any Final Fantasy i’ve played. It just didn’t ‘click’ with me. A true villain is practically non-existant and although it’s been a year since I played it, I still remembered parts of it but I can’t for the life of me remember any true stand-out moments. I will say this, though, Square-Enix do have skills in making CG cutscenes.

The main cast of characters are charismatic, well thought up, and have stand-out designs. This is a group that I’ll remember for a long time to come.

Final Fantasy XIII – 2 is in the mail, and I can’t wait to jump back into this world. I’m eager to see how they have added to its battle system as it was pretty much already perfect to begin with. The fact that its sequel has something to do with time travel (I love my time travel!) only makes me want to jump into it more! More impressions to come!
