This is a surprise hit that I was definitely not expecting. Read on why.
Nier: Automata
Release Date – March 7th 2017
NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.
I haven’t played a game like Nier in so very long, one that completely captivates me and makes me want to go so deep into its story that I become intoxicated and I drown. Seriously, though, everything about it is beautiful, and dare I say it, a work of art. I thought Final Fantasy XV would be that ultimate game for me, sadly it wasn’t (not to say it wasn’t good, though) but Nier is it for me.
I know nothing about the series and went in just knowing that Platinum games were behind it and that was enough for a purchase. The music? Absolutely incredible, gameplay? Very rewarding. But the story? That’s the only thing I can’t see what other people are raving about, I’m 23 hours in, have 3 endings unlocked I think but to me, it doesn’t really stick out. Let’s get into detail.
The combat is fantastic, you can have a total of 6 attack methods at any given time. 4 combat weapons, 2 pod weapons. This is Platinum games we are talking about here, so you know we are in for a treat! The thrill of pulling off combos, stringing together 8 plus hits is a great feeling.
The graphics aren’t the greatest but it does its job, everything is soaked with gray tones but there are some spots with greenery that create a great splash of color. Particles fly off weapons making it sometimes hard to see what you are doing, but they add so much color to the screen.
The music, oh man, this. fucking. music. I haven’t heard this great of music in who knows when. Beautiful vocals play throughout tracks, sweeping orchestras also come into play. This is the type of soundtrack that I would play in the car.
I am playing with the mindset that I will try my hardest not to look up a way to get through if I get stuck. Luckily it’s been paying off. I was stuck for a whole hour at one point but when I did finally figure out what to do, I was really satisfied.
Let me gush a little more about this game because it deserves all the praise that I can give it. This game is so good to me that I immediately went out and bought Nier 1 and Drakengard 3 for the ps3 just to get more into the lore.
Nier has entered my top 10 favorite games, possibly top 5, and definitely top 5 in the past decade. It’s not without its faults of course but what game isn’t. There is a ton of gameplay here, and so many endings its insane. You will get at least 25 hours out of it in the minimum.
I rarely say this, BUT, EVERYTHING, the outstandingly fun gameplay, the beautiful music, the tough bosses. This game is the complete package.
I have to nitpick, the story could have been more pronounced.
I don’t believe a game can be perfect, but it can be given a perfect score for being so good. I strongly urge everyone to pick it up.
