Release Date – May 15, 2015
Journal – Play Session #1
Hours Played – 40 Minutes

A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

I only played through the tutorial which was about 40 minutes including a decent amount of story. From what I played this game is going to be a good one. The combat feels good, and especially good since I used an Xbox¬†360 controller, something that I recommend¬†everyone to get. Tapping Right Bumper is melee, and aiming with the right analog stick and tapping RB makes you shoot out “balls” as they call them. During the tutorial, you get a taste of everything, the level design is very reminiscent of Zelda, with lots of jumping mixed in. I played a small sample of the puzzles as well, there were statues that unlocked once you hit them with balls, some were placed in odd areas but I blew by them with ease, again this was only the tutorial. After finishing up, I got a taste of how the story would go, and I’m impressed. I wonder what will come next. Until next time.

The controls were nice and tight, I like that melee, and shooting out ‘balls’ were mapped to the RB. The setup for an interesting story is there as well.

The tutorial felt a little too long, wouldn’t hurt to include at least one medium level puzzle. Just nitpicking here.

It’s just the tutorial so you can’t expect much, but I did enjoy what I played. I’m looking forward to playing more.
